Marketplace take-rate report 2026

Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated October 28, 2026

How much of a sale does each platform keep? We put the same four baskets — a $25, $50, $100 and $500 sale with no buyer-paid shipping — through the mandatory fee schedule of every platform we track, as a new seller in the platform’s home market would pay it. The schedules come from the provider’s own fee page, each one dated and linked on its calculator (latest verification 2026-09-23). Everything below is computed from those schedules and free to quote.

10.0%

Median take rate on a $100 sale across all 29 platforms. The mean is 8.7%; payment processors pull it down, marketplaces push it up.

10×

Poshmark (20.0%) keeps 10 times as much of a $100 sale as Venmo (2.0%), the cheapest platform that charges anything at all.

17 of 29

Platforms that add a fixed fee per order. For them the average take rate is 8.6% on a $25 sale but 6.9% on a $500 sale — the same schedule, 1.2 times the bite.

13 changes

Fee changes we recorded in 2026 across the platforms we track: 9 already in effect, 2 announced for a future date, the rest structural (how a rate is published rather than the rate itself).

Key findings

  • The cheapest way to be paid is not a marketplace. The five lowest take rates at $100 all belong to payment services or a store’s own checkout: Venmo (2.0%), Wise (2.3%), Cash App (2.8%), Braintree (3.1%) and Shopify (3.2%). They bring no buyers, which is the fee a marketplace is really charging for.
  • Marketplaces cluster at 10–15%. The 17 marketplaces have a median take rate of 10.0% on a $100 sale; the five most expensive platforms overall are Poshmark (20.0%), Fiverr (20.0%), Walmart Marketplace (15.0%), Amazon (15.0%) and eBay (14.0%).
  • Fixed fees decide the small-order economics. Wise’s schedule costs 7.4% of a $25 sale but 0.9% of a $500 sale — the widest gap among platforms with a fixed component. Sellers of low-priced items should rank platforms by the $25 column, not the headline rate.
  • One platform charges sellers nothing. Vinted funds itself entirely from a buyer-paid protection fee, so the seller receives the full listed price and the buyer pays more than it.
  • Rates moved 13 times this year. The fee-change log records each one with its source; the most common direction in 2026 was a move from a flat commission to tiered or category-based rates.

Methodology

Baskets. Four item prices ($25, $50, $100, $500), no buyer-paid shipping, no sales tax, no optional services. Take rate = total mandatory per-sale fees ÷ sale price.

Schedules. Each platform’s default schedule in its registry region: the rate a new seller without a store subscription pays in the platform’s most common category, through standard online checkout. Where a platform publishes tiers by price or seller level, the tier that applies at the modelled basket is used in its calculator; this report uses the base schedule. Amazon FBA is excluded because fulfilment is a logistics service, not a selling fee.

Sources.Every schedule is read from the provider’s own published fee page and carries that URL and a verification date on its calculator page. Figures on this report are computed from the schedules at build time, so a registry change updates the report automatically. Full detail in our methodology and editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a marketplace take rate?

The share of a sale the platform keeps in mandatory per-sale fees — commission, transaction fee and payment processing combined — divided by the amount the buyer pays. It excludes optional costs such as advertising, subscriptions, shipping labels and currency conversion.

Why does the take rate change with the sale amount?

Because 17 of the 29 platforms charge a fixed fee per order alongside the percentage. A $0.49 fixed fee is 2% of a $25 sale but 0.1% of a $500 sale, so platforms with fixed fees are relatively expensive for small orders and cheap for large ones.

Which fee schedule is used for each platform?

The default schedule a new seller faces in the platform's home market: no store subscription, the most common category, standard online checkout. Category-specific rates, seller tiers and volume discounts are modelled in each platform's calculator, not here.
