What Braintree is, and who it is for
Braintree is PayPal's developer-facing payment gateway: the API behind card payments in apps such as Uber, Airbnb and many SaaS products. Its standard US pricing is 2.59% + $0.49 per transaction for cards and digital wallets, with no monthly, setup or gateway fees on the standard plan. Merchants with volume can negotiate interchange-plus pricing instead. Braintree also supports PayPal, Venmo (in the US), Apple Pay, Google Pay and ACH, each with its own rate — ACH direct debit costs 0.75% per transaction capped at $5, for instance.
Because Braintree is a gateway and merchant account combined, it suits businesses that want to build their own checkout, run subscriptions or marketplaces, or split payments between parties. A small store on Shopify or WooCommerce rarely needs it; those platforms bundle Stripe or their own processor.
Costs beyond the headline rate
Cards issued outside the US add a 1% cross-border fee, and settling in a currency other than the one charged adds a further 1% conversion fee. American Express is processed at the same 2.59% + $0.49 through Braintree's Amex programme in the US, which is cheaper than many processors' Amex rates. Chargebacks cost $15 each. Refunds return the percentage but Braintree keeps the fixed $0.49, so a refunded $100 sale still costs about $0.49 net of the returned percentage.
How Braintree compares
Against Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30, Braintree's 2.59% + $0.49 is cheaper on any transaction above about $61 and more expensive below it, because of the higher fixed fee. Against PayPal Checkout's 3.49% + $0.49, Braintree is cheaper at every price point — which is the point: PayPal owns both and positions Braintree as its integrated, lower-rate option for merchants who build their own checkout. Square's 3.3% + $0.30 online is more expensive than either on typical order sizes.
