Stripe Fees in the Netherlands (2026): Cards vs the €0,29 iDEAL

By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated August 2026

The Netherlands is the one major European market where cards are the minority payment method — most Dutch online purchases go through iDEAL, and Stripe prices it as a flat €0,29 per transaction regardless of amount. That single fact changes the fee arithmetic more than any card rate. Here are the 2026 numbers.

The rate card

Stripe's Dutch card pricing follows the standard euro-area ladder, with iDEAL priced separately as a flat amount:

PaymentRateFee on €100
EEA standard card1,5% + €0,25€1,75
EEA premium card2,8% + €0,25€3,05
UK card2,5% + €0,25€2,75
International card3,15% + €0,25€3,40
iDEAL€0,29 flat€0,29

iDEAL beats cards at every realistic amount

Because iDEAL is a flat fee and cards are a percentage, there is a crossover — and it sits absurdly low. Setting 1,5% × amount + €0,25 equal to €0,29 gives about €2,67. Above €2,67, iDEAL is cheaper. Below it, a card is — and almost nothing online costs less than €2,67.

The gap grows without limit: on a €100 order iDEAL costs €0,29 against €1,75 by card — 83% less. On €1.000, €0,29 against €15,25 — 98% less.

For a Dutch store doing €30.000 a month, shifting the payment mix from 50% iDEAL to 80% iDEAL saves roughly €1.600 a year, for the cost of reordering the checkout buttons.

Why Dutch businesses still take cards

Foreign customers. iDEAL is a Dutch rail — a German, British, or American buyer pays by card, and those cards climb the ladder: 1,5% EEA, 2,5% UK, 3,15% international, plus 2% if the currency converts.

The practical setup for a Dutch store is therefore iDEAL first for the home market and cards for everyone else — and pricing in euro so conversion stays the buyer's problem. Multi-currency settlement, where you hold payouts in another currency, costs a further 1% of payout volume.

Against PayPal in the Netherlands

PayPal charges Dutch businesses 3,40% + €0,35 — nearly twelve times iDEAL's cost on a €100 sale. The Dutch market is the clearest case in Europe where the local rail is not just cheaper than the American processors but categorically different.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Stripe charge in the Netherlands?

1,5% + €0,25 for standard EEA cards, 2,5% + €0,25 for UK cards, 3,15% + €0,25 for international cards, and a flat €0,29 per iDEAL transaction. Currency conversion adds 2%.

Is iDEAL cheaper than cards on Stripe?

Above about €2,67, always — and dramatically so as amounts grow. A €100 sale costs €0,29 by iDEAL against €1,75 by EEA card (83% less), and €1.000 costs €0,29 against €15,25 (98% less).

Why does iDEAL cost a flat fee instead of a percentage?

iDEAL is a bank-transfer rail rather than a card network, so there is no interchange percentage underneath it. Stripe passes it through as a flat €0,29 per transaction regardless of the amount.

What do foreign customers cost a Dutch business on Stripe?

A UK card is 2,5% + €0,25 and any other non-EEA card is 3,15% + €0,25, plus 2% if Stripe converts the currency. Pricing in euro keeps the conversion on the buyer's side.

Stripe fees in other countries

Stripe prices every market differently — the same sale can cost twice as much depending on where your business is registered. We verify each of these against Stripe’s own published fee page for that country:
