Stripe Fees in India (2026): Domestic vs International Rates
By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated August 2026
India is one of the few markets where Stripe is cheaper than in the United States for local sales and considerably more expensive for foreign ones. A domestic card costs 2%; the same amount billed to a US client in dollars can cost more than three times that once presentment and conversion are counted. Here is the full 2026 ladder.
Domestic cards: 2%, no fixed fee
For Visa and Mastercard issued in India, Stripe charges a flat 2% of the transaction with no per-transaction fixed fee. On ₹5,000 that is ₹100; on ₹50,000, ₹1,000.
The absence of a fixed fee matters more than the headline: because nothing is charged per transaction, the effective rate stays 2% whether the sale is ₹100 or ₹1 lakh. In the US, the equivalent 2.9% + $0.30 turns into 5.9% on a $10 sale. Indian merchants selling low-ticket digital products are in an unusually good position here.
Domestic debit cards are separately capped by regulation at 0.4% MDR with a ₹200 ceiling, so large debit-card transactions cost far less than the card rate suggests.
The international ladder — where the cost multiplies
Stripe India prices foreign cards in tiers, and the tier depends on both the card and the currency you charge in.
The gap between the first row and the last is the single most important number for any Indian business with overseas customers: the same sale costs 2% or 6.3% depending on how it is billed.
| Payment | Stripe rate |
|---|---|
| India-issued Visa / Mastercard | 2% |
| Foreign Visa / Mastercard | 3% |
| Foreign American Express | 3.5% |
| Foreign card charged in USD or another currency | 4.3% |
| Currency conversion, when required | +2% |
| Worst case (foreign card, USD presentment, converted) | 6.3% |
A $1,000 invoice to a US client
Charge it in dollars to a US card and Stripe applies the 4.3% presentment rate, then 2% to convert the proceeds to rupees. That is 6.3%, or roughly $63 on the invoice.
Charge the same client in rupees instead and the foreign-card rate is 3% with no conversion step — about $30. The client sees an INR amount and their own bank handles the conversion, which is often at a better rate than they would get through you anyway.
For Indian freelancers and SaaS businesses this single decision — which currency the charge is presented in — is worth more than any other fee optimisation available on the platform. Compare the alternatives in the Payoneer fee calculator and Wise fee calculator before committing to a default.
Disputes cost ₹1,000 either way
A dispute costs ₹1,000 when it is received, and countering it costs a further ₹1,000 — refunded only if you win. So a single lost chargeback on a ₹2,000 order costs more than the order was worth.
For low-value, high-volume businesses this is the fee line that actually threatens the margin, not the 2%. Clear billing descriptors and prompt refunds are worth more than a rate negotiation.
Where Stripe sits against the alternatives in India
For domestic sales, 2% with no fixed fee is competitive with the local gateways and simpler to reconcile.
For inbound foreign payments, Stripe is rarely the cheapest route — PayPal India cannot process domestic payments at all and charges 4.40% + ₹3 plus conversion on international ones (full breakdown), while dedicated transfer services price the conversion far more tightly. The pattern that wins for most Indian exporters is Stripe or a local gateway for Indian customers, and a specialist provider for foreign receivables.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge in India?
2% for Visa and Mastercard issued in India, with no fixed per-transaction fee. Foreign cards are 3%, foreign American Express is 3.5%, and a foreign card charged in a currency other than rupees is 4.3% — plus 2% if Stripe converts the proceeds.
Why is my Stripe fee higher than 2%?
Because the card was issued outside India, or the charge was presented in a foreign currency, or both. A US card charged in dollars and converted to rupees costs 6.3% against the 2% domestic rate.
Should I bill overseas clients in rupees or dollars?
Billing in rupees costs 3% on a foreign card; billing in dollars and converting costs 6.3%. Unless the client specifically requires their own currency, rupee pricing roughly halves the fee on international sales.
Does Stripe India charge a fixed fee per transaction?
No. Unlike the US and most European markets, Stripe India's card rate carries no fixed amount, so the effective percentage stays the same on small and large transactions alike.
What does a chargeback cost on Stripe India?
₹1,000 when the dispute is received and another ₹1,000 to counter it, with the counter fee refunded if you win. On low-value orders a single lost dispute can cost more than the sale.
