Stripe Fees in Switzerland (2026): Double the EU, One Border Away
By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated August 2026
Cross the border from Germany into Switzerland and the same Stripe transaction nearly doubles in price: 1,5% becomes 2,9%. The reason is regulatory, not commercial — Switzerland sits outside the EU interchange cap — and it makes Swiss payment strategy look very different from its neighbours'. Here are the 2026 numbers.
The rate card
Stripe Switzerland charges 2,9% + CHF 0.30 on domestic cards online and 3,25% + CHF 0.30 on international ones, with 2% added where currency conversion is required.
In person the picture inverts dramatically: EEA cards on Stripe Terminal cost 1,4% + CHF 0.10 — less than half the online rate — and non-EEA cards 2,9% + CHF 0.10.
| Payment | Rate | Fee on CHF 100 |
|---|---|---|
| Swiss card, online | 2,9% + CHF 0.30 | CHF 3.20 |
| International card, online | 3,25% + CHF 0.30 | CHF 3.55 |
| EEA card, in person | 1,4% + CHF 0.10 | CHF 1.50 |
| Non-EEA card, in person | 2,9% + CHF 0.10 | CHF 3.00 |
| SEPA Direct Debit | CHF 0.40 flat | CHF 0.40 |
| Currency conversion | +2% | — |
Why Switzerland costs double its neighbours
An EU business pays Stripe 1,5% + €0,25 on an EEA card because European interchange is capped by regulation at 0,2–0,3%. Switzerland is not in the EU, the cap does not apply, and Swiss interchange — and therefore Stripe's rate — is roughly double.
This is the same pattern as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Brazil: the processor's margin barely changes between markets, but the regulated floor underneath it does. Nothing a Swiss merchant negotiates will move it.
The in-person rate is the quiet opportunity
At 1,4% + CHF 0.10 for EEA cards, Stripe's Swiss in-person rate is cheaper than its own online rate by more than half — and cheaper than most Swiss acquirers' terminal pricing.
For hybrid businesses — a shop with a webstore, a market stall, a service business that can take payment on site — routing whatever volume can plausibly happen in person through Terminal is worth real money: on CHF 20.000 a month of mixed volume, an extra 30% shifted in-person saves roughly CHF 1.200 a year.
Getting paid from abroad
Swiss businesses invoice across borders constantly, and the euro corridor is the one to optimise. SEPA Direct Debit at a flat CHF 0.40 is by far the cheapest rail for recurring EU clients — on a CHF 2.000 invoice it costs 0,02% where a card costs 3,25%.
For one-off foreign payments, price in francs where the client accepts it (conversion stays their problem), and compare what a specialist provider charges on the same amount in the Wise fee calculator. For the neighbouring picture, see Stripe fees in Germany and France.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge in Switzerland?
2,9% + CHF 0.30 per successful domestic card transaction online, 3,25% + CHF 0.30 for international cards, plus 2% where currency conversion applies. In person, EEA cards cost 1,4% + CHF 0.10.
Why is Stripe more expensive in Switzerland than in the EU?
The EU caps card interchange at 0,2–0,3%; Switzerland is outside that regulation, so the cost floor under Stripe's rate is roughly double. A German business pays 1,5% for the same EEA card a Swiss business pays 2,9% to accept.
Is it cheaper to take payments in person in Switzerland?
Much cheaper for European cards: 1,4% + CHF 0.10 on Stripe Terminal against 2,9% + CHF 0.30 online — less than half the cost on a typical transaction.
What is the cheapest way to collect recurring EU payments in Switzerland?
SEPA Direct Debit, at a flat CHF 0.40 per collection regardless of amount — 0,02% on a CHF 2.000 invoice, where an international card would cost 3,25% + CHF 0.30.
