Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in CHF, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the CHF exchange rate.

How a Swiss dealer quote is built
Swiss banks and dealers quote refinery bars (PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus) at a small premium over the franc spot price; because the refineries are local, Swiss bar premiums are among the lowest anywhere. Investment gold is VAT-free; jewellery carries 8.1% VAT. The Vreneli 20-franc coin trades at a premium that reflects collector demand as well as metal.
Selling gold in Switzerland
Banks buy back bars they sold and dealers buy any recognised bar at a discount close to the buying premium. Private individuals pay no capital gains tax on gold in Switzerland, though gold holdings are counted in the annual wealth tax that most cantons levy.
