Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in CNY, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the CNY exchange rate.

Gold in China: the local market
China is the world's largest gold consumer and producer. Traditional demand is 24K 'chuk kam' (full gold) jewelry sold by weight plus a workmanship fee, alongside booming investment in small bars and 'gold beans' among younger savers.
Prices key off the Shanghai Gold Exchange benchmark, which can trade at a premium or discount to London spot depending on import quotas and local demand.
