Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in EGP, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the EGP exchange rate.

Gold in Egypt: the local market
Egypt's standard is 21K ('ayar 21'), stamped and sold per gram across the gold districts of Cairo's Sagha and beyond. Gold is the default household hedge: every pound devaluation sends buyers to the souq.
Local prices can run above the converted international spot when the pound is under pressure — a premium that reflects import scarcity and demand for hard assets.

How an Egyptian shop quote is built
Egyptian shops quote 21K per gram at the day's rate set in the Sagha district, and add a workmanship charge (masna'iya) per gram that varies with the design. The pound's official rate is the one this page uses; when the parallel market diverges, the souk price follows the parallel rate, and local gold prices then run above the converted figure here.
Selling gold in Egypt
Shops buy back 21K at the day's rate less a small deduction and disregard the workmanship charge, so plain pieces bought with low masna'iya hold value best. Bars of 21K and 24K, increasingly sold by goldsmiths and banks, sell back closest to the rate.
