Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in BDT, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the BDT exchange rate.

Gold in Bangladesh: the local market
Bangladeshi gold is quoted per bhori (11.664 g) — Bajus, the national jewellers' association, publishes the official bhori rate that shops follow — with 22K the wedding standard.
Remittances from the Gulf frequently convert straight into gold, and the bhori price is tracked in daily newspapers like a stock index.

How a Bangladeshi shop quote is built
Bajus publishes an official rate per bhori (11.664 g) for each karat that every shop displays, and the making charge and 5% VAT are added on top. Because the official rate is set by the association rather than by the market minute to minute, it can lag the converted world price on this page by a day or two in either direction.
Selling gold in Bangladesh
Shops buy back at the Bajus rate for the karat with a deduction that is highest for unmarked or worn pieces; making charges and VAT are not recovered. Gold bought abroad by returning workers must be declared within the duty-free allowance to be resold without difficulty.
