Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in VND, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the VND exchange rate.

Gold in Vietnam: the local market
Vietnamese gold is measured in tael (lượng, 37.5 g), with the SJC-branded tael bar the national standard — often trading at a substantial premium to world spot because of import controls.
Gold is deeply embedded in Vietnamese life: property deals were historically priced in taels, and 24K rings and 'thần tài' (god of wealth) day purchases remain huge demand events.

How a Vietnamese quote is built
Vietnamese prices are quoted per tael (37.5 g) for SJC bars and for 24K rings (nhẫn tròn trơn), with buy and sell prices posted by SJC, DOJI and PNJ that move through the day. SJC bars have traded at a large premium to the world price because the state controls bar imports; rings and jewellery gold trade closer to the international figure on this page.
Selling gold in Vietnam
Gold shops buy back SJC bars and their own-brand rings at the posted buy price, and the buy-sell spread — sometimes wide when the market is volatile — is the round-trip cost. Bars of other brands and foreign bars sell back at a discount to SJC.
