Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in JPY, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the JPY exchange rate.

Gold in Japan: the local market
Japanese jewelry is predominantly 18K (K18), with investment demand in 24K (K24) ingots from Tanaka and Mitsubishi Materials — often bought gram by gram through accumulation plans (junkin tsumitate).
Japan's 10% consumption tax applies to gold purchases but is returned in the sale price when you sell back — effectively neutral for patient holders.
