Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in EUR, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the EUR exchange rate.

Gold in Germany: the local market
Germans are Europe's biggest private gold buyers — physical bars and coins (Krugerrand, Vreneli, Maple Leaf) held at home or in bank vaults, a habit rooted in the hyperinflation memory of the 1920s.
Like the rest of the EU, investment gold is VAT-exempt in Germany, and gains are even income-tax-free after a one-year holding period — one of the most gold-friendly tax regimes anywhere.
