Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the price in TRY, we convert at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, then adjust for karat purity. That is why the local price moves with both the gold market and the TRY exchange rate.

Gold in Turkey: the local market
Gold is Turkey's household savings account: with the lira's long inflation history, families hold Republic coins (Cumhuriyet Altını) and quarter coins (çeyrek), gifted at weddings and births, alongside 22K bilezik bracelets that trade close to bullion value.
The Grand Bazaar's gold quarter sets reference prices daily, and per-gram 24K ('gram altın') has become a popular bank-account savings product.

How a Turkish quote is built
Turkish gold is quoted in three ways: gram altın (24K per gram, the price banks use for gold accounts), the Republic coin series (çeyrek, yarım, tam, ata — quarter, half, full and Atatürk coins), and 22K bilezik bracelets by the gram. Coins carry a workmanship premium of a few percent over their gold content; bracelets a little more; gram altın in a bank account none.
The lira's depreciation is the reason gold is Turkey's savings instrument, and it makes the lira price on this page move far more than the dollar price. A holding that looks flat in dollars can show large lira gains, which is what savers are protecting against.
Selling gold in Turkey
Jewellers in the Grand Bazaar and in every town buy coins back at close to their gold content with a small spread, and bracelets at the gram rate less a deduction. Bank gold accounts can be sold instantly at the bank's buy rate. Coins gifted at weddings and births are generally kept in their original condition because a damaged coin loses its premium.
