Shopify Fees in New Zealand (2026): A Plan Priced in US Dollars

By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated August 2026

New Zealand Shopify merchants carry a cost that merchants in the UK, Canada, and Australia do not: the subscription is priced in US dollars while the revenue and card fees are in New Zealand dollars. Your platform bill moves with the exchange rate. Here are the 2026 numbers and what that quirk is worth.

Plans in USD, card fees in NZD

Shopify quotes New Zealand plan prices in US dollars and charges card processing in New Zealand dollars:

That split is the unusual part. A 10% move in the exchange rate changes your subscription cost by 10% while your revenue and processing costs stay put — a small currency exposure sitting inside a fixed cost most merchants treat as fixed.

GrowUS$105US$792.45% + $0.301.65%1%
AdvancedUS$399US$2992.35% + $0.301.5%0.6%

In person costs far less than online

The gap between online and in-person is wider in New Zealand than in most Shopify markets: 1.8% in person against 2.65% + 30c online on Basic. On a NZ$50 sale that is NZ$0.90 against NZ$1.63.

For a business running both a website and a market stall or shopfront, that difference is worth structuring around — it is nearly half the cost of acceptance, before the fixed fee is even counted.

Amex and international cards carry their own rates

Unlike most markets on this site, Shopify New Zealand publishes separate rates by card network and origin. American Express costs 3.5% + 30c on Basic and international cards 3.3% + 30c, against 2.65% for a standard domestic card.

The Amex premium of roughly 0.85 points is worth knowing before you enable it: on NZ$10,000 of monthly Amex volume it is NZ$85 a month. Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on whether those customers would otherwise pay with something else.

Card type (Basic plan)Rate

Upgrade break-evens, and the third-party penalty

Basic to Grow costs US$66 more a month and saves 0.2% on card rates, so it breaks even at roughly US$33,000-equivalent in monthly card sales. Grow to Advanced costs US$294 more for a further 0.1%, needing close to US$294,000 — effectively never, on rate alone.

The bigger number is the third-party transaction fee: 2% on Basic if you take payments through anything other than Shopify Payments. In New Zealand that 2% is almost as large as the entire 2.65% card rate it sits on top of.
