Shopify Fees in Canada (2026): Plans, Card Rates, Break-Evens

By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated August 2026

Canadian Shopify merchants pay noticeably more per sale than British or Australian ones, and the plan ladder is steep enough that upgrading for a lower rate almost never pays at normal store sizes. Here are the 2026 numbers, and the exact revenue at which each upgrade starts to make sense.

What each plan costs in Canada

Prices in Canadian dollars; the yearly column is the effective monthly price when paid annually.

PlanMonthlyPaid yearlyOnline card rateIn personThird-party gateway fee
BasicC$49C$372.8% + 30¢2.6%2%
GrowC$132C$992.6% + 30¢2.5%1%
AdvancedC$517C$3892.4% + 30¢2.4%0.6%

Upgrading almost never pays for the rate alone

Each step up the ladder buys 0.2 percentage points. The break-even is the monthly card volume at which that saving covers the extra subscription:

Basic to Grow costs C$83 more a month and saves 0.2%, so you need about C$41,500 in monthly card sales before it is cheaper on fees. Grow to Advanced costs C$385 more for another 0.2%, needing roughly C$192,500 a month.

That is a very different picture from the UK, where the Basic-to-Grow break-even is around £13,300, because the UK rate gap is 0.3 points on a much smaller card rate. In Canada, upgrade for features — not for the percentage.

The third-party gateway penalty

Take payments through anything other than Shopify Payments and Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of that provider's charges: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced.

On C$20,000 of monthly sales on Basic that is C$400 a month — eight times the plan price — before the gateway's own processing fee. In Canada the penalty is worth more attention than usual, because the 2% applies on top of card rates that are already among Shopify's higher ones.

A realistic month at C$10,000

A Basic-plan Canadian store doing C$10,000 across 150 orders using Shopify Payments: C$49 for the plan, C$280 in percentage fees, C$45 in fixed fees — C$374, or 3.7% of revenue.

The same store on a third-party gateway would add C$200 on top, taking it to 5.7%. That single choice is worth more than four months of the subscription.
