Nisab in Pakistan: tola, and the bank deduction in Ramadan

Pakistan weighs gold in tola (11.664 g). The 85-gram gold nisab is about 7.29 tola; the traditional 7.5-tola figure corresponds to the alternate 87.48-gram standard. Under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, banks deduct 2.5% zakat from savings accounts on the first of Ramadan unless the holder has filed an exemption declaration — check your statement so you do not pay twice on the same money.

The rupee floats, so the PKR nisab moves with both gold and the exchange rate. Jewellers commonly trade 22K and 21K. Nisab is measured in pure gold, and jewellery is never pure: multiply each piece's weight by its karat's purity (0.9167 for 22K, 0.875 for 21K, 0.75 for 18K, 0.585 for 14K) before comparing the total with 85 grams. The zakat year

The zakat year (hawl) is lunar — about 354 days, not 365. Fixing one Hijri date each year (many people use Ramadan) keeps the calculation consistent; paying on a Gregorian anniversary drifts eleven days later every year.

Common situations for zakat payers in Pakistan

The bank deduction: on the first of Ramadan, Pakistani banks deduct 2.5% zakat from savings and profit-and-loss accounts above the exemption limit unless the holder has filed a declaration (CZ-50) exempting them on grounds of belief. Many people whose bank deducted zakat then compute their remaining zakat on gold, cash at home and other assets and pay the balance themselves.

Prize bonds and National Savings certificates are zakatable at face value; committees (rotating savings groups) are zakatable on the amount you have paid in that you are owed back. Gold is held in tola — about 7.29 tola for the 85-gram standard — and mostly at 22K and 21K, so convert by purity.

Where Pakistanis pay zakat

Direct payment to poor relatives, neighbours and madrasas is the norm, alongside large charities such as Edhi, Saylani and Al-Khidmat. The state Zakat Fund distributes what banks deduct.
