How Much Does Upwork Take? (2026 Freelancer Service Fee)

By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated September 2026

The short answer: since May 2025 Upwork no longer charges one rate. The freelancer service fee is set per contract somewhere between 0% and 15%, shown and locked before you accept, and about 10% is the most common figure — so roughly $100 kept of every $1,000 goes to Upwork on a typical contract. Here is how the variable fee works, what it costs at real contract sizes, the costs beyond the fee, and how it compares with Fiverr's flat 20%.

From a flat 10% to a variable 0–15%

For years Upwork charged freelancers a flat 10% service fee on earnings. In May 2025 it replaced that with a variable fee: each contract carries its own rate, between 0% and 15%, which Upwork displays when you send a proposal or receive an offer and locks for the life of that contract. Upwork does not publish a formula; in practice most freelancers report rates clustered around 10%, with lower rates appearing on some invitations and higher ones on some open-market bids.

The rate is charged on everything paid under the contract — hourly billings, fixed-price milestones and bonuses — and deducted before the balance reaches your Upwork account.

Worked examples

Because the rate varies, the same $1,000 contract can cost you anything from nothing to $150. The rows below bracket the range and mark the typical 10% case:

The costs that are not the service fee

Connects: bidding on jobs costs Connects, which you buy in bundles. They are not a percentage of earnings, but a freelancer who wins one job in ten is paying a real acquisition cost per contract that the service fee does not show. Withdrawal: moving money from your Upwork balance to a bank, PayPal or a payout provider carries its own per-transfer fee and, outside the US, a currency-conversion spread that is often larger than the transfer fee. Client-side fees: clients pay their own marketplace fee, which does not come from your earnings but does affect what a client is willing to pay you.

For freelancers paid in dollars and living elsewhere, the conversion step is where the largest hidden cost sits. Our Wise and Payoneer calculators show what a $1,000 withdrawal actually lands as in your currency.

Upwork vs Fiverr

Fiverr charges a flat 20% on every order, including tips. At a typical 10% Upwork rate, Upwork keeps half as much: $900 versus $800 on $1,000 of work. Even at Upwork's 15% ceiling it remains cheaper than Fiverr. Fiverr's argument is that its buyers come to you with money already committed, so the unpaid proposal time that Upwork's model requires is the true difference between the two — see how much Fiverr takes and compare the two on your own numbers in the Fiverr vs Upwork calculator.

Working the variable rate

Because the fee is locked per contract, the moment to act on it is before you accept. A 15% rate on a long hourly engagement is worth negotiating around — a slightly higher hourly rate covers it, and the client's own fee is unaffected by yours. Read the rate on every offer; two identical-looking contracts can differ by five points. Then enter your exact rate in the Upwork fee calculator to see the take-home, and use the freelance rate calculator to set an hourly price that still clears your target after the fee and the withdrawal costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Upwork take from a $1,000 contract?

It depends on the rate shown on that contract: between $0 and $150. At the most common rate of about 10%, Upwork takes $100 and you keep $900 before withdrawal fees.

Is Upwork's fee still a flat 10%?

No. The flat 10% ended in May 2025. Each contract now carries a variable fee between 0% and 15%, shown and locked before you accept. Around 10% remains the most common rate in practice.

When do I find out my Upwork fee?

When you send a proposal or receive an offer. The rate is displayed at that point and locked for the life of the contract, so there is no surprise at payout.

Is Upwork cheaper than Fiverr?

Yes, on fees. Upwork's 0–15% variable fee (typically about 10%) is below Fiverr's flat 20% at every point in its range. On $1,000 of work you keep $900 on Upwork at 10% versus $800 on Fiverr.
