How Much Does Shopify Take Per Sale? (2026 Fees Explained)
By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated September 2026
The short answer: Shopify takes no percentage of your sales. What you pay is a monthly plan, a card-processing rate on each order when you use Shopify Payments, and — only if you route payments through a third-party provider like PayPal or Stripe directly — an additional transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. On a $100 order with Shopify Payments on Basic that is a card fee of about $3.20 plus your share of the subscription. This guide is careful about one thing most Shopify fee articles are not: Shopify no longer prints its card rates on its public pricing page, and it prices plans differently by country. We say exactly which numbers are published, which are verified, and which you will only see inside your own admin.
Three cost lines, no commission
Unlike a marketplace, Shopify is a store platform, and it earns from you in three ways. The subscription: a monthly or annual plan. The card rate: when you use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a percentage plus a fixed amount on each card order, and there is no separate fee to Visa or Mastercard. The third-party transaction fee: charged only when a payment is processed by a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments or PayPal Express Checkout — and, for stores created on or after 12 May 2025, on the portion of an order paid with store credit or gift cards.
Shopify's own help centre puts it plainly: with Shopify Payments you pay the credit card rate and no third-party transaction fees; with another provider you pay that provider's card rate and Shopify's transaction fee on top. That double charge is the trap for merchants who prefer PayPal or a local gateway.
| Cost line | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party transaction fee (published, all regions) | 2% | 1% | 0.6% | 0.2% |

What Shopify publishes about plan prices — and why yours may differ
Shopify's pricing page carries a monthly and an annual price per plan, but it renders them for the visitor's region: Shopify offers reduced subscription prices in countries with a lower cost of living, and the help centre says eligibility follows where your store is located. When we loaded the page from outside the United States on 22 September 2026, it showed Basic at $27 a month ($19 billed yearly) and Grow at $72 ($54 yearly), while Advanced was $399 ($299 yearly) — the same Advanced price as the US list. The US list prices in our registry, verified in August 2026, are Basic $39 ($29 yearly), Grow $105 ($79 yearly) and Advanced $399 ($299 yearly). Use the price your own admin shows; the structure is the same everywhere.
Whatever the plan costs, the way to think about it is per order. A $39 Basic plan spread across 20 orders a month is $1.95 an order — more than the card fee on a $50 sale. Across 200 orders it is 20 cents. Shopify gets cheaper per order the more you sell on it, which is the opposite of a marketplace.
| Basic plan at $39/mo | Orders per month | Subscription cost per order |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $3.90 | |
| 20 | $1.95 | |
| 100 | $0.39 | |
| 500 | $0.08 |
The card rate: published, then not
For years Shopify's pricing page listed the Shopify Payments card rates by plan. As of 22 September 2026 the US page no longer prints them: it says only that card rates vary by plan and are shown when you activate Shopify Payments, and the help centre's billing overview says the same. That is a structural change in transparency, and we log it on our fee changes tracker alongside TikTok Shop's login-walled rate card.
The last openly published US online rates, which our registry still carries from its August 2026 verification, were 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.6% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 30¢ on Advanced, with lower in-person rates. Treat those as the reference point, not a promise: the rate that governs is the one on your admin's Payments settings page, and it can differ by country and by plan generation. The worked examples below use the Basic reference rate and say so.
Worked examples: Shopify Payments vs a third-party gateway
Basic plan, reference card rate of 2.9% + 30¢, and PayPal's standard 3.49% + 49¢ as the third-party example. The right-hand column is the one to notice: routing a $100 order through PayPal on Basic costs $5.98, nearly double Shopify Payments, because Shopify's 2% is added to PayPal's own fee.
| Order | Shopify Payments (2.9% + 30¢) | Via PayPal on Basic (3.49% + 49¢ + 2%) |
|---|---|---|
| $25 | $1.03 | $1.86 |
| $100 | $3.20 | $5.98 |
| $250 | $7.55 | $14.22 |
| $1,000 | $29.30 | $55.39 |
Does the next plan up pay for itself?
For a merchant on Shopify Payments, upgrading lowers the card rate by a few tenths of a point and costs a larger subscription. Using the reference rates and US list prices, Basic to Grow saves 0.3 points of card fees for $66 more a month, which breaks even at $22,000 of monthly card volume; Grow to Advanced saves 0.2 points for $294 more, breaking even at $147,000. The published third-party fee has a clearer break-even: a merchant who insists on an external gateway saves a full point moving Basic to Grow, which pays back at $6,600 of monthly volume. Below those thresholds, choose the plan for its features, not the rate.
Model your own order value and volume in the Shopify fee calculator, which has plan and third-party-gateway toggles, and see how Shopify compares with selling on a marketplace in Shopify vs Etsy and the Amazon vs Shopify calculator.
| Upgrade (US list prices, reference rates) | Extra subscription | Saving | Break-even monthly volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic → Grow, Shopify Payments | $66/mo | 0.3 pt | $22,000 |
| Grow → Advanced, Shopify Payments | $294/mo | 0.2 pt | $147,000 |
| Basic → Grow, third-party gateway | $66/mo | 1.0 pt | $6,600 |
The fees people forget
Refunds: Shopify's help centre states that credit card transaction fees are not returned when you issue a refund. Currency: selling in a customer's currency and settling in yours goes through Shopify Payments' conversion, at a fee on top of the card rate. UK and EU sellers: since Brexit, Visa and Mastercard classify UK–EU card transactions as international, and Shopify charges the international rate on them — a detail covered in our Shopify fees in the UK guide. Apps and themes: not Shopify fees, but the line that grows fastest on most Shopify bills.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?
No commission. With Shopify Payments you pay only the card-processing rate per order plus your plan. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus, on top of that provider's own fee.
How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
With Shopify Payments on Basic, about $3.20 at the reference rate of 2.9% + 30¢, plus your share of the monthly plan. Through a third-party gateway such as PayPal it is about $5.98: PayPal's 3.49% + 49¢ plus Shopify's 2% transaction fee.
What are Shopify's credit card rates in 2026?
Shopify no longer prints them on its public pricing page; they are shown in your admin when you activate Shopify Payments and vary by plan and country. The last openly published US online rates were 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic), 2.6% + 30¢ (Grow) and 2.4% + 30¢ (Advanced).
Why does Shopify's pricing page show different plan prices in different countries?
Shopify applies local pricing to subscription plans in some regions based on where the store is located. Basic and Grow are the plans most affected; Advanced showed $399 monthly ($299 yearly) in every render we checked. The third-party transaction fee percentages are the same everywhere.
