Nigeria ran parallel official and black-market rates for years until the naira was floated in June 2023 — the currency then repriced sharply, and NGN remains among the most volatile currencies we track.

Nigeria is Africa's largest remittance market, and its tech-savvy population is a heavy user of stablecoins and crypto for cross-border value transfer — one reason the naira's true street rate has always mattered more than official quotes.

Who converts dollars to naira, and what it costs

Nigeria is Africa's largest remittance market, with over $20 billion a year arriving from Nigerians in the US, the UK and elsewhere, and a large population of freelancers, developers and creators paid in dollars. The USD to NGN rate went through a dramatic reset in 2023–2024 when the central bank unified its multiple exchange rates and let the naira float: it moved from about 460 to over 1,500 per dollar.

For years the official rate and the parallel (black-market) rate diverged widely, and remittances went through informal channels to capture the better rate. Since unification the two have largely converged, and formal channels — the transfer apps, and bank domiciliary (dollar) accounts — have become the sensible route again. PayPal allows Nigerians to send but not, for most accounts, to receive; Payoneer, Grey, Geegpay and similar services are the common receiving routes for freelancers, with conversion costs of 1–3% depending on the service.
