About ten million Filipinos work abroad, and their remittances — more than $35 billion a year, largely from the US, the Gulf and Asia — are the single biggest reason the USD to PHP rate is one of the most searched conversions in the world. The Philippines is also one of the largest markets for online freelancing and virtual-assistant work paid in dollars.
The remittance corridor to the Philippines is highly competitive: GCash and Maya wallets receive from the major transfer services within minutes, bank deposits are cheap, and cash pickup remains widespread. Rates offered by the specialist apps sit within about 0.5–1% of the mid-market figure here. For freelancers, PayPal to a local bank or GCash converts at PayPal's spread of about 3–4%; Wise and Payoneer cost less, and a dollar account at a Philippine bank lets you choose when to convert.
What moves the peso
The peso floats and moves mainly with US interest rates and the country's import bill; it weakened from about 50 to near 58 per dollar between 2021 and 2024 as the Fed raised rates. Remittance months (Christmas, school enrolment) bring seasonal demand for pesos that can firm the rate slightly.
