How Much Does Whatnot Take? (2026 Seller Fees — New Tiered Commission)

The short answer: a new or small Whatnot seller in the US pays an 8% commission on the item price (4% on coins), plus payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the full order — about $11.20 on a $100 sale with free shipping. But from 21 September 2026 the commission is no longer flat. Whatnot moved every seller onto a tiered rate card where your total sales over each four-week period set your commission for the next one, per category, down to 4.5% for fashion and 4% for the 'Other' vertical. This guide reproduces the full US table from Whatnot's help center and walks through what it does to your payout.
What changed on 21 September 2026
Until this month Whatnot charged a flat commission: 8% on the final sale price for most categories, 4% on Coins & Money, and a limited-time 0% on the portion of a trading-card, comic, sports-single or toy order above $1,500. Whatnot's help page, updated 17 September 2026, announces that this structure is replaced by tiers that went live for existing sellers on 21 September and for new sellers the week after.
Three rules define the new system. Your total sales across all categories in a 28-day period set your tier; your tier sets a commission rate per category for the following 28 days; and the tier resets every period — sales do not carry over, so a strong month buys one cheap month, not a permanent discount. Whatnot placed existing sellers in an opening tier based on their sales from 24 August to 20 September.
The full US rate card
Commission is charged on the item's sale price only — Whatnot calls this GMV, and buyer-paid shipping and sales tax are excluded. Rates are per category of the show (for live sales) or the product (for marketplace sales). The 'Lowest public rate' cells are where the table stops; Whatnot says rates as low as 3% exist only as custom terms for its very largest sellers with an account manager.

Payment processing: the second fee, and it is charged on more
Processing is separate from commission and does not fall with your tier. In the US, Canada and Australia it is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction; in the EU and UK it is 2.42% + €/£0.25 plus VAT. Unlike commission, processing is charged on the total the buyer pays — item, shipping and tax — so on a low-priced item with shipping, processing can cost more than the commission.
Whatnot's own example makes the base difference explicit: on a $10 item with $4.99 shipping and $0.85 tax, its 8% commission on the $10 item is $0.80, whereas a marketplace charging 6% on the full $15.84 would take $0.95. The point is fair, and the flip side is that processing at 2.9% + $0.30 on that same $15.84 total adds another $0.76 — so the seller's real Whatnot cost on that order is $1.56, or 15.6% of the item price.
Worked examples
Standard tier, $100 fashion item, free shipping, no tax: $8.00 commission + ($2.90 + $0.30) processing = $11.20, and you keep $88.80. The same item at Tier 3 (after a $50k+ month) is $5.50 + $3.20 = $8.70. For coins, the standard tier already sits at 4%, so the tier ladder is worth only half a point:

The fine print that moves your rate
Premier Shop: until 31 October 2026 the Premier Shop 10% commission discount still applies on top of your tier rate (a 5% rate becomes 4.5%). From 1 November the discount is gone and commission is set purely by tier. Promotional rates such as new-seller 0% periods override your tier rate while they run, and those sales still count toward your next tier.
Cancellations and local-pickup orders are subtracted from your period total. Private shows do not count. Each seller account earns its own tier — sales on two accounts do not combine. And listing in the wrong category to reach a cheaper column is treated as fee avoidance, so a fashion seller cannot borrow the Coins rate.
Whatnot also runs regular limited-time promotions (0% commission weeks for specific categories or markets) announced on its help center. They are worth watching in Q4, when live-selling volume peaks and a 0% week can be the difference between a Tier 2 and Tier 3 month.
What a rational Whatnot seller does with the tiers
The thresholds are sales in a 28-day window, so timing matters more than it used to. If you are near a threshold late in a period, a scheduled show that pushes you over buys a lower rate on every sale for the next four weeks. Conversely, spreading the same volume evenly across two periods can leave you in Standard both times. Track the projected rate in Seller Hub, which extrapolates your pace to the end of the period.
The category columns are not equal. Sports and TCG barely move — from 8% to 6.5% across half a million dollars of sales — while Fashion and Other drop to 4.5% and 4% by $100,000–$250,000. A multi-category seller should notice that their total sales set the tier but each sale is charged its own category's rate, so mixed shows do not dilute anything.
