How Much Does Venmo Take for Business Payments? (2026 Fees)

By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated September 2026

The short answer: Venmo takes 1.9% + $0.10 on every payment of $1 or more that a business profile receives from another Venmo account — $2.00 on a $100 sale — and 2.29% + $0.10 on contactless payments taken with Tap to Pay. Personal friends-and-family payments are free, but they carry no purchase protection and are not meant for sales. Venmo's fee is among the lowest of any US payment app, and it is not refundable if you refund the customer.

The business profile fee

Venmo's help centre states two rates for business profiles. A direct payment from another Venmo account costs the seller 1.9% + $0.10 of the payment total. A contactless payment accepted with Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android costs 2.29% + $0.10. Both are deducted automatically from the amount the customer sends, and both apply only to payments of $1.00 or more.

The buyer pays nothing extra — and, usefully, a Venmo user paying a business profile with a credit card is exempt from Venmo's standard 3% credit-card funding fee, which removes a reason for customers to avoid paying by card.

Worked examples

The $0.10 fixed fee is small enough that Venmo stays under 3% even on a $10 payment — unusual among payment apps:

Payment receivedFee (1.9% + $0.10)Effective rateYou receive
$10$0.292.9%$9.71

$100$2.002.0%$98.00

Refunds and what is not covered

Venmo does not refund the seller fee when you refund a customer, so a refunded $100 sale costs you $2.00. The fee buys purchase protection on eligible transactions and a business profile with tax reporting; it does not buy chargeback-style dispute tooling comparable to a merchant account. For sales to strangers, that protection is the reason to use a business profile rather than a personal one.

Venmo against PayPal, Cash App and card processors

On a $100 sale Venmo's $2.00 undercuts every mainstream option: Cash App's business rate is $2.75, Square in person $2.75, Stripe online $3.20 and PayPal Checkout — Venmo's own parent — $3.98. The catch is reach: the buyer must be a Venmo user paying from the app, which suits in-person and social selling and not a checkout page. Model a batch of payments in the Venmo fee calculator and compare with PayPal and Cash App.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Venmo take from a $100 business payment?

$2.00 — the 1.9% + $0.10 business profile fee — leaving $98.00. A $100 contactless payment via Tap to Pay costs $2.39.

Are personal Venmo payments free?

Yes, friends-and-family payments carry no fee for either side (unless the sender funds it with a credit card, which costs them 3%). They have no purchase protection and are not intended for sales.

Does Venmo refund the seller fee on a refund?

No. Venmo states it cannot refund seller fees on payments sent to a business profile, so a refunded sale still costs the fee.

Is Venmo cheaper than PayPal for sellers?

Yes. Venmo's 1.9% + $0.10 is roughly half PayPal Checkout's 3.49% + $0.49 — $2.00 versus $3.98 on a $100 sale — but only works for buyers paying from a Venmo account.
