Best Platforms for Digital Product Sellers (2026)
By the Profitvana Editorial Team · Updated May 2026
Selling templates, courses, presets, or memberships in 2026 means picking between four very different platforms. Each one trades fees for reach or simplicity in its own way. Here is which one fits which seller.
Gumroad: simplest setup
Gumroad's pitch is "upload a file, share a link, get paid." Direct sales cost 10% + $0.50, with card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on top — roughly 12.9% + $0.80 total. Gumroad acts as merchant of record since 2025, so it handles VAT, GST, and sales tax worldwide for you.
Best for: first-time digital sellers, low-volume products, and anyone who values simplicity over branding. Worst for: established creators with their own audience — the fee is meaningful at scale.
Patreon: recurring members
Patreon is built around monthly memberships and tiers, not one-time purchases. New creators (post-August 2025) pay 10% plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing — roughly 13–14% of pledges. Legacy creators kept their 5%, 8%, or 12% rates.
Best for: predictable recurring income from a loyal audience. Worst for: one-off digital downloads (use Gumroad) and creators who can host membership themselves on Shopify or a custom site at lower cost.
Etsy (digital products)
Etsy allows digital downloads with the same fee stack as physical: $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 processing — about 10–11% total. The win is Etsy's built-in audience actively shopping for templates, printables, and graphics.
Best for: design-style products (planners, SVG cuts, fonts, art prints) where Etsy's audience is concentrated. Worst for: courses, software, or anything outside Etsy's craft-adjacent niches.
Shopify + apps: own your store
Shopify itself is monthly ($39–$399), and an app like SendOwl, Sky Pilot, or Digital Downloads handles delivery for a small fee. Payment processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic — and you keep the customer list, the email, and the brand.
Best for: established sellers above ~$2k/month in digital revenue, anyone running multiple products or upsells. Worst for: someone testing one product — the monthly fee outweighs the savings until volume picks up.
Which to pick — and how to mix them
Start on Gumroad to validate a product without setup work. Move to Shopify once recurring monthly revenue covers the $39 plan with margin to spare. Add Etsy alongside if your product fits its niches and you want extra discovery.
Patreon stays its own world — pick it if your model is genuinely recurring (community, ongoing content), not for downloads. Plenty of creators run all four with different products on each.
